Mercury Rising?

I was in for a shock of cold this morning when I took my daughter to school...and believe you me, my skin thought it was going into shock. Apparently I'm not a native Alaskan, Scandinavian, or Rus, because the mercury was "only" sitting at the ten degree mark. I can feel the Floridians shudder from here.

After bringing more firewood in and getting a blazing fire going in the stove, I thought to myself, I hate cold...I can't wait till it's spring.

Wishing my life away? Sacrilege! So rather than moping and pouting that it's cold and my blood has turned to ice in my veins (I'm sparing you the more earthy description my brother-in-law would give, you can thank me later), I'm going to make a list of reasons to enjoy the cold weather.

Cold Weather Love
* a true appreciation for hot chocolate, hot tea, and hot coffee...there's nothing like feeling the warmth actually spread down your throat and through your belly.
* the smell of wood smoke and the warmth of a fire
* the crisp scent of snow and ice in the air
* the delight on a child's face as they peer out the window on the first real snowfall
* the rosy cheeks on said child, the only skin visible under all the bundling worthy of the Michelin Man
* no insects...'nuf said.
* the pure ice blue of the winter sky
* the clarity of the stars in the night
* snuggling under layers of blankets and quilts in warm, fuzzy jammies
* lobster-red skin after a long, hot shower (it's horrible for the skin, but ooooo does that heat feel good!)
* soup simmering on the stove or stew in the crockpot, filling the kitchen with steam and the house with smells of goodness
* curling up with children and dogs on the couch with a story book, using all the voices and drama in your repetoire
* snow days
* birds chattering at the window as they raid the feeder

And my personal favorite at the moment:
* that it's cold enough not to break a sweat while trekking the ten minute walk from the car up the slope to class. ;)

Well, that certainly explains a lot...

First Egg of the Season

...the first Cadbury's egg, that is. It always amazes me how quickly the stores put out merchandise. Easter is still months away...but who can resist the Cadbury Bunny?

Seven Things About Me...

Hat tip to Another Meshugganah Mommy for this...

Seven Things About Me (as I look around for inspiration to strike):
1. I am a voracious reader, and usually have multiple books going at a time.

2. My wedding band is actually a family heirloom from my husband's great-grandmother.

3. I am a tree hugger. I support environmental charities and try my best to make green choices.

4. Although I try to keep a scrapbook, it's like pulling teeth to get me to work on it. So today I put over 300 photos waiting to be scrapped into a simple photo album instead.

5. As much as I hate that my husband is in the military, I considered going into the military myself once upon a time. I even had a "Go Navy" bumper sticker on the bunk bed when I was in elementary school.

6. I am a failed organizer. I buy totes, calendars, planners, and datebooks, but I still miss or barely keep appointments because I forget the day they're on. Today I bought a huge binder that's supposed to be like a mini-office in the hopes that I might actually become organized this year. Keep your fingers crossed!

7. My husband and I have a weird affection for the sappy cards with little kids on them for Valentine's Day. Don't ask me why, and don't ask me who started the trend. All I know is we've both given each other the same style cards nearly every year. It's amazingly cheesy and cutesy, but who knows which of us will stop it. (I'm giving him a Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh Gone With the Wind-themed card this year, so maybe it will be me.) Do they sell Kim Anderson-style cards in the Big Sandbox?

Ok, there's my 7. To anyone who has read through the meme...TAG, YOU'RE IT!
